The Crisis

Family homelessness is one of the fastest growing segments of the homeless population. Two trends are largely responsible for the rise in homelessness over the past 20-25 years:  a growing shortage of affordable rental housing and a simultaneous increase in poverty.

Homeless families are often invisible. They live in cars, hotels or doubled up with family or friends in apartments or houses.

More than 1,000 families enter St. Louis emergency shelters every year.

The Facts

  • If a homeless family does not stabilize in 90 days, the risk of chronic homelessness triples – as does the cost to the region.
  • Studies show that 50% of children experiencing even short-term homelessness demonstrate measurable development and academic delays, compared with 16% of poor but housed children.
  • About 50% of the families referred to Humanitri’s Transformational Housing Program are coming from domestic violence shelters.

Being homeless is stressful enough, the added fears and circumstances of domestic violence compound the situation. Insufficient income, a lack of affordable housing, and increasing utility costs all contribute to housing instability. Lack of education also reduces employment prospects, in terms of earning a living wage to maintain housing.  But there is HOPE

HUMANITRI is about TRANSFORMATION.

We believe that every individual, created and loved by God, deserves to be treated with dignity and given the opportunity for a new start.

We work to stabilize families in crisis by providing temporary housing, a support network, and the resources and skills they need to establish sustainable life change.

We live our mission every day

Humanitri, as Christ’s hands of mercy, helps unhoused families achieve stability in a safe and supportive community, providing the skills and resources they need to thrive.
